At Sykes Roofing, we believe that the roof over your head does more than just provide shelter—it forms the first line of defence against Australia's often harsh and unpredictable weather conditions. Serving Brisbane and the surrounding suburbs for over 30 years, we've seen first-hand the wear and tear that roofs endure over the years. This, coupled with the age of your roof, can lead to potential structural and interior damage if not addressed promptly.
Roof replacement is more than just a cosmetic upgrade. It's an investment that ensures the longevity of your property and provides peace of mind knowing that you and your loved ones are protected. Whether your home sports an old tiled roof, an asbestos roof or an old tin roof, we specialise in replacing it with sturdy and reliable Colorbond Bluescope steel.
In the Brisbane climate, the importance of a sound and resilient roof cannot be overstated. The sun, wind, and occasional storms all take a toll, gradually wearing down your roof until it's no longer as effective as it once was. Roof replacement is an essential maintenance practice that ensures your home remains safe and comfortable all year round.
Here at Sykes Roofing, we don't just stop at removing your old roofing materials. If your roof is made of fibro asbestos, you can rest assured knowing that we are fully licensed for its removal. We also arrange for an accredited company to dispose of this dangerous material in accordance with government standards. Once completed, a licensed asbestos assessor will inspect the site and provide an asbestos clearance certificate.
So, if you're in Brisbane and need a roof replacement, Sykes Roofing is your go-to specialist. The roof over your head is our business, and we take it very seriously. Contact us today to discuss your needs and learn how we can help. Let's ensure that your home is as safe and secure as it can be —starting from the top.
Metal roof replacements in COLORBOND® are becoming a popular re-roofing choice for Brisbane homeowners these days. Some of the key benefits of a COLORBOND® roof include its durability, anti-corrosion properties, and its long-lasting colour. There are many styles to pick from, ensuring that you will find the perfect roofing solution for your home.
A common question that people with an old metal roof in need of maintenance ask themselves is: “Should I simply undertake minor roof repairs, replace the roof with new COLORBOND®, re-roof with new Zincalume, or should I have a roof restoration completed involving rust neutralising, pressure cleaning and re-coating. It can be a very difficult decision to make.
Firstly, you must consult a professional because Sykes Roofing specialises in all options for roofing problems; our expert tradesmen will give you the facts and offer you unbiased opinions. Secondly, all of the above solutions have their own advantages. There really isn't a simple answer, and it often comes down to working out which option best suits you.
When metal roofs get to a point where they can no longer be repaired, they need a complete Re-Roof. Many years ago, as far back as the late 19th century, all galvanised corrugated roofing sheets were made from wrought iron. The process of galvanising requires the sheets to be hot dipped in molten zinc. From 1890 to around 1910, the steel-making and processing methods got substantially better and therefore, Mild Steel replaced wrought iron as the material of choice. Galvanized Steel has a limited life span due to its oxidising properties, and if not looked after correctly, it can corrode easily.
The manufacture and use of this galvanised steel product continued to be the only metal roofing material until about 1976. BHP had introduced a new coating to their product consisting of half Zinc and half Aluminium. They called this product ZINCALUME®. Galvanised steel is still produced today. However, ZINCALUME® is a much more widely used product. Both products are available in an oven-baked, pre-painted finish which provides for much longer-lasting durability and colour fastness.
After carefully deciding on your desired metal roofing product, including your gutters, flashings and downpipes and your choice of colour, it's time to remove the old roofing material. A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is completed before job commencement to facilitate the most assured and practical way to undertake the project. Safety railing is often a mandatory requirement before work starts. This is installed, and the old sheeting and old guttering is removed from the roof in sections.
Typically, a standard metal roof, tiled roof or fibro asbestos roof can be striped and relayed in one day. A roof with tiles is usually a much more labour-intensive removal project and requires more time. Some large, tiled roofs require two days to be able to throw off all the tiles and ridge capping. In some cases, the tiles and ridge capping are salvageable and are placed on the ground for tile companies to take away, but for the most part, the tiles have seen better days and are of no use. The tiles are thrown into a large skip along with any unusable battens. Any old flashings and valley irons are thrown out.
The Rhino Earthwool Insulation is the best insulation on the market, and it goes on top of the roof battens & the roof sheets sit directly on it. It is great soundproofing, stops dust and prevents condensation leaking into your roof space which causes mould on ceilings and keeps the house cool in summer and warm in winter.
We then lay down the Rhino Earthwool Insulation and Re-batten where necessary in preparation for laying the new roofing sheets ensuring that we use the longest possible lengths as practical to minimise any joins.
Gutters, downpipes, and valleys are usually installed at this stage.
After the roofing sheets and gutters have been put on and roughed in, the capping and flashings are secured. Your metal roof replacement is now complete, and a final inspection is carried out prior to certification.
